Basic Information
Overview
It is a branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art(MMCA) inside the Deoksugung palace. The museum opened in 1998 by renovating Seokjojeon Hall, a modern stone architecture in the palace built by Japan as an art museum in 1938 during the period of Japanese occupation. The museum building has a symmetrical left and right structure with six stone pillars standing amazingly in the front and is one of the representative works of modern architecture in Korea.
Attractions
The main exhibition spaces include the first and second exhibition rooms on the second floor, and the third and fourth exhibition rooms on the third floor. In each exhibition room, Korean, Asian, and Western modern and contemporary artworks are displayed. The theme changes for each exhibition, including planned exhibitions and collective exhibitions.
Accessibility
The entryway is gently inclined with no steps or raised spots and tactile paving is installed. Wheelchair users need to use the inclined platform lift as there are steps at the main entrance. There is an information desk at the entrance where visitors can rent audio guide devices. In the exhibition room on the second floor, there are chairs everywhere so visitors can relax even in the middle of the tour. The nursing room with a diaper changing station is next to the information desk. The accessible restroom is in the Deoksugung palace. The wheelchair and stroller rental is available at the palace as well.
