Basic Information

Overview 

Changdeokgung Palace is a royal palace of Joseon near the peak Eungbong, part of Bugaksan Mountain. Changdeokgung Palace was built in 1405 as 'Igung'. 'Igung' means a palace built in case Gyeongbokgung Palace was not available. The palace was called 'Donggwal(east palace)' because it was brother Palace with Changgyeonggung Palace in the Joseon Dynasty because they formed a one palace zone. The palace is destroyed during the Japanese Invasion of Imjin and was rebuilt in 1610 by Gwanghaegun


Attractions 

There are two representative tour courses in Changdeokgung Palace. The first is the basic course, which is from Jeongjeon(main builing of palace, jeongjeon of Changdeokgung is called Anjeongjeon) to Nakseonjae(living room for king or royal family). The second is the garden course, which leads to Buyongji(first building of garden) to Okryucheon(stream in the garden).

Gyeongbokgung Palace shows the authority of the king in a symmetrical straight line on the flat land. On the other hand, Changdeokgung Palace is in harmony with nature by arranging buildings and spaces according to the topography of peak Eungbong. The garden of Changdeokgung Palace, also known as the secret garden, is a representative garden of Joseon, with trees, ponds, pavilions, and stones laid out in beautiful harmony. 

It was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 as a palace with the best preservation of the original structures and layout among the remaining palaces of the Joseon Dynasty, and showcasing the harmonious balance of nature and Korean design sentiments.


Accessibility 

wheelchair users and strollers can enter and exit through main entrance. However, Some part like road with sand or arched stone, uphill and pavilions is needed caution to wheelchair users and strollers. wheelchair and stroller rental service is also available near the main entrance. Korean braille description board for people with visual impairment and an audio guide service is available. Parking facilities for persons with disablities are installed. Accessible restroom for persons with disabilities is located near Geumhomun Gate, Nakseonjae, Buyongji. There is enough space for wheelchairs. A nursing room is located near the entrance and there is a diaper changing station.
