Contents

Seolleung has a structure of “dongwonigangreung” (double mounds onseparate hills) that sets up only one shrine for the two tombs located onseparate hills, which respectively belong to the king and the queen. Whenviewed from the shrine, the left hill (west) is the tomb of King Seongjong andthe right hill (east) is the tomb of Queen Jeonghyeon. The tomb of KingSeongjong is surrounded by stone screens and railings, along with stone civiland military officials, stone horses, stone lanterns, stone tables, stonepillars, stone sheep, and stone tigers that are all placed around it. The tombof Queen Jeonghyeon has the same design as King Seongjong’s tomb, but withoutstone screens. Jeoneung shares similarities with Seolleung in terms of thearrangement of stone sheep and stone tigers, but it features a detailedexpression that is a bit more realistic. The stone civil and military officialsstand over 3 meters in height and have big, protruding, round eyes. Seolleungand Jeongneung have suffered greatly, destroyed during the Imjin War (JapaneseInvasion in 1592) and damaged by a fire during the reign of King Injo.
